Paul preached Jesus' resurrection, then a great sermon about God, then he decided to focus on Jesus' crucifixion. Acts 17:16-18:1; 1 Corinthians 2:2

Come and hear. I will declare the works of the Lord. These three passages are why I preach. Psalm 66:8-20; 73:25-28; 118:17

Be ready always to answer those who ask, with humility, respect, and deep authenticity, about the hope we have in Jesus' resurrection and reign. 1 Peter 3:13-22

"I'm going now," said Jesus. Where're you going? Can we come, too? Who's going to stay with us? "The Holy Spirit," said Jesus. John 14:15-22

Thoughts about Listening

Observation and listening helps a person to speak more effectively into the lives of others. Acts 17:16-18:1

I need a listener so I can figure out what I want to say! Psalm 66:8-20; 73:25-28; 118:17

The last time you told stories about your life, what was the thread running through them? Listen back, and find the theme and tone. 1 Peter 2:13-22

It's much easier to listen well if I've been listened to. John 14:15-22

Bible Reading Group Homework

1.    Sing together “Nobody Knows the Trouble I’ve Seen.” Take five minutes to intentionally lament your troubles.

2.    Read or listen to 1 Peter 3:13-22. In the setting of suffering, what did Peter tell believers to do (verses 15-16)? List, describe, and discuss all the modifiers Peter used for that activity.

3.    Read or listen to Acts 17:16-18:1. What were the themes of Paul’s preaching at Athens (verses 18 and 23)? What was the theme Paul preached in Corinth, immediately after Athens (1 Corinthians 2:2)? How are these different or similar?

4.    Read or listen to Psalm 66. Discover and list all the troubles or suffering mentioned in this Psalm. With which ones do you relate? What did the psalmist say he would do in these troubles (verse 16)?

5.    Read or listen to John 14:15-21. What was the trouble Jesus was addressing in this chapter? What was Jesus’ solution so they wouldn’t be left comfortless and orphans (verses 16-18)? What did Jesus ask the disciples to do in love to Him (verses 15 and 21)?
