Romans 2:11-29

1.    First uses of “law” in Romans happen here. Notice carefully the context of each use to understand the various nuances.

2.    Compare this reading with Romans 9:30 to 10:5. How are both of these passages important to Paul’s logic?

3.     Is there a natural law written in the hearts of even unbelievers? Why would someone want to deny that?

4.    Notice the use of Isaiah 52:5 in verse 24. How was Paul using this passage? What might his readers have understood from its use?

5.    Ponder the function of this passage in the outline of the letter. Look for images and echoes from the Old Testament. Look for similarities in Paul’s other letters. Look for echoes of Jesus. What questions arise for you out of the reading of this text? What did you learn that was new to you, or a new way of looking at something? What does this text tell you about God and about yourself? About humans in general?
